How To Preserve the Lifespan of your Dump Truck Tarp System

Many dump truck operators and maintenance workers are pulling out the trucks after our long winter, to find their tarp systems looking like they have taken quite the beating over last year. With the economy still working its way back, many are still trying to save money by any means. One aspect however you should take seriously is your trailer or truck coverings. Outlined below are easy ways to save your tarps and systems from the brutal environment they endure.

Step One: Block the Wind

Believe it not the air on the road can do serious damage on your system. Bugs, rocks, sand, glass, birds, freezing air, hail, bridges, there are numerous threats in the air. All of these will not destroy your tarp at once, but over time it will weaken and eventually wear on your tarp. Thus causing it to become brittle and easily torn. An easy way to combat the elements is using a Wind Deflector or Housing unit for your tarp while it is spooled up. View them here http://goo.gl/WfvcZh

Using a Deflector or Housing unit will protect your tarp system from the elements and debris that is polluting the roadways. Not only will it protect your tarp system it will also help aerodynamics of your truck. Granted it will not save you tons of money but it will help some.

Step Two: Keep it rolled up when not in use.

When you are not hauling a load make sure to keep your tarp system rolled up snug and tight. This prevents accidents from happening. When you go to fill up and the guy filling your truck is not paying attention it could be lights out for your tarp if it is not rolled up. Or if your arms are not down all the way the wind will catch your tarp and whip it around thus doing more damage. It is best just to only have the tarp down when you actually need it, or the state you are in requires it.

Step Three: Check your system often

Be sure to check your system at least once a month. Check the connections, bolts, the arms, the tarp axel, and the tarp. It is much cheaper to replace one small part than a whole system due to negligence. Also run a full system check, turn your system on and watch it open and close. If you notice it is not closing or opening all the way, you need to bring it to your local repair shop asap.
